Re-Power Initiative for Obsolete Central Inverters (400-800VAC)
A Game-Changer in Power Distribution for Solar

As the existing central inverter-based infrastructure ages many farms 10 years & older are finding the equipment on their farms is obsolete. Many of the inverter manufacturers have gone out of business or if still in business can no longer offer timely support for outdated equipment. At EPEC Solar Solutions, we recognize the importance of innovative technology in meeting this need. Enter our switchboard, UL listed from 400-800VAC — a high-performance solution designed to optimize power management in solar re-power opportunities.

In this blog, we will explore why the EPEC line of switchboards is a meaningful change in solar re-power opportunities, how it boosts energy efficiency, and why it is essential for ensuring the future scalability of your renewable energy plants

Why would I utilize switchboards to replace my failed central inverter in Re-power applications?

Central inverter solar plants may range in size from 1-200MW.   Central inverter failures may plague a small percentage of the overall MW output, however to meet the requirement of power purchase agreements (PPA) these units must be repaired / replaced and put back into service.   However, repairs can take months or be impossible due to central inverter manufacturer no longer supporting products or being entirely out of business.

However, with string inverter technology these central inverters can be replaced as they fail, and unlike central inverters, string inverters are modular and mass-produced.   Typically, 10-15 string inverters replace one central inverter, thus when a failure occurs the amount of power lost is minimal and the string can be replaced by a local O&M crew.  That is versus scheduling and flying in a technician (if available) from a central inverter company.

But a key to re-power is to match the secondary voltage of the existing power block transformer.   String inverters have flexibility in voltage output, by choosing the right voltage class inverters customers can easily match the transformer secondary voltage.

String inverters also require an AC collection switchboard.  This switchboard ties in the output of the power block string inverters and transfers the power to the existing power block transformer.  This AC collection equipment is where EPEC comes into play, and where UL certifications of voltages above 600VAC is paramount.

Key Advantages of EPEC Re-Power Switchboards

  • UL Listed Up to 800VAC: The 400-800VAC range allows the switchboard to handle all voltage levels found in central configurations, making it perfect for solar farms re-power opportunities.
  • Scalable for Future Growth: Whether replacing a few or a lot, the string inverter / EPEC switchboard combination allows you to flex as required.  This makes it a future-proof investment as your energy needs evolve.
  • Enhanced Safety Measures: Managing high-voltage electricity requires top-tier safety protocols. The switchboard includes advanced safety features like circuit breakers, isolators, and protective fuses that safeguard both your system and personnel. This level of protection is vital for industries where operational reliability and safety are paramount.
  • Protective Relaying & Control:  The EPEC SWBD family is fully flexible if ungrounded wye applications require voltage detection of ground faults, or if grounding transformers require shunt trip of main breakers.   Remote operation and control are also available.

Why Re-Power with string inverters and EPEC switchboards may be Perfect for your Solar Installations

  • Flexible for your existing MVT transformer fleet this offers great savings in your re-power requirement.
  • Staged installation replaces units as they fail.
  • Flexible technology implementation utilize & pay for only the features required.
